What’s wrong with wrinkles anyway? |
| RAW GAIA'S "ETHICAL MARKETING" APPROACH TO BEAUTY AND AGEING |
|
We are appalled by the majority of marketing campaigns aimed at women, which have created false standards of beauty and make women feel inadequate and unsure about their bodies, and in particular, about ageing skin.
In view of this, Raw Gaia has adopted an "ethical marketing" approach to beauty and ageing, so here is what we have to say:
We are constantly bombarded with images of the ‘perfect woman’, typically a model in her late teens, very slim and wearing make-up done by a professional artist. Moreover, and what most people don’t know, the photograph is then airbrushed; skin, body and face features are enhanced and made completely flawless with the help of computer software. So these images of femininity and beauty that we see all around us are of women that literally don’t exist!
The problem is that this makes women feel inadequate, unhappy and unsure about themselves. Have you noticed that pretty much every woman you know will admit in confidence that she feels unhappy about some part, or all, of her body, that she would feel happier if she could change it? To us, this is awful!
Ageing skin is now a particular concern for women. According to a recent market research study, over 90% of women do not feel good about the way their skin looks, regardless of how old they are. This same study acknowledged that nowadays even young women in their early 20s have concerns about wrinkles.
We find it disgraceful that skin care companies use these images to convey the hidden message that ageing skin is not beautiful, not lovable. Sometimes this message is even blatantly explicit. For instance, we found a natural skin care company referring to wrinkles as "unsightly"! We think that creating the need for a product by making women feel bad about themselves is just plain cruel.
Raw Gaia has therefore adopted an "ethical marketing approach to beauty and ageing. We have taken off any mention in our products about de-ageing, wrinkles, rejuvenation, etc. All our marketing literature has been carefully scrutinised to remove anything that would make women feel unsure about their skin and body. On our website, a section has been created to provide information on how to achieve healthy skin through right diet, natural skin care and a positive mental attitude.
We are doing this because we don't want to contribute in any way to this madness. Evidently, we are not suggesting that people shouldn’t use skin care products anymore. On the contrary, it is good and important to have skin that is healthy and full of vitality. Such skin is beautiful, regardless of whether it is aged. Our purpose is to offer you the purest skin care products that truly promote healthy and beautiful skin, by using organic, vegan and unheated, plant-based ingredients.
We invite you to use our products (or any truly natural skin care products for that matter) because you are moved to take good care of yourself and your body, because you want to feel good and not as a result of feeling inadequate or unhappy.
We have all been brainwashed but now is time to see through these unreal, false standards of beauty, created by years and years of unkind marketing tactics. Whenever you see one of those ads, know that they are completely unreal images, the result of computer trickery, makeup, a little bit of nip / tuck action, etc.
Ageing is inevitable and cannot be stopped, not even using the best natural skin care. Botox and all the rest of invasive surgical treatments don’t make you look in your 20s either. But the key point is: ‘What is wrong with wrinkles anyway?’ And of course, the answer is: ‘nothing!’

|
“I applaud your stance on the anti-ageing hysteria and concur wholeheartedly... In regards to photo manipulation, Cindy Crawford once said in an interview: "Even I don't look like me". Caprice recently admitted on TV that ALL her photos are retouched. I used to work as a make-up artist so I know it's all true."

“Your statement opened my eyes. I had never thought of it that way before, and I realised just how brainwashed we are throughout our lives to buy into this beauty fascism. I will still moisturise and protect my skin from UV rays as best I can, but I won't panic because my skin gradually changes over the years. Besides, those Hollywood women who have reached 60 and are wrinkle-free through surgery and endless layers of make-up, well, they're
really quite scary, aren't they?"

“I think it's fantastic that Raw Gaia has been courageous enough to fight against the ever growing obsession with getting old, by removing all references to anti-ageing on their products. Not only do they produce 100% natural and organic skincare products but they proving to be true innovators taking a stand against a ridiculous stereotype forced onto women by the mainstream beauty industry."

“Your statement is courageous and inspirational. Raw Gaia has already set a new standard in the skin care industry, it's only a matter of time before the world knows about it."

“I am so pleased you are speaking out... Women are bombarded constantly from every angle with suggestions that their skin isn't perfect enough, or that wrinkles caused by laughter and just living life, are awful and something to feel anxious about... Obviously nobody wants to look like the back of a bus and so will take care to keep skin moist and healthy if possible... Evidently, it's the old selling ploy of the dream fulfilled if you buy a certain product/versus guilt ("it's your fault if you neglect yourself and don't buy this amazing skin cream/lotion/potion if you don't"). Keep up the good work!"

“I applaud you for making such a a necessary & true statement. I agree wholeheartedly. I work with photography so i know how much retouching can be done & is done. It's quite amazing how the beauty & fashion industry have spellbound women for decades, one might even go as far as saying that the industry have kept us women slaves. We age, it's inevitable. Ageing shouldn't be viewed as unsightly in any way. I, personally, would not want to look 20 in my 50's, even if it was possible. I'd like to age with grace. I've seen many people age beautifully. many become more handsome & beautiful with age... There is nothing unsightly
about wrinkles :-)"

“I think you are making a marvelous stand for sense. If more companies were as honest as Raw Gaia, perhaps their products could be cheaper because they don't have to pay for non-sensical advertising. More people mwould buy them then and everyone would be able to breathe a sigh of relief, including the skin care companies because they would no longer be trying to sell a lie!"

“Your statement on age and beauty is, in a word, BRILLIANT! It really lifted my heart to read that there are still people out there that care about this issue in a world where sexism seems ever growing... It was the most uplifting and joyful thing for me to read, so well done for your integrity and love on this issue"

“I would just like to let you know that I agree wholeheartedly with your stance and hope that others within the beauty industry may start to take note and stop this impossible notion that we must look young. In the past I admit that I have bought no end of products and can’t think of any of them that live up to their promises. I am now a lot happier knowing that the fab Raw Gaia products I use are actually natural and not made from chemical cocktails and/or animal derivatives."

“Just to let you know that i wholeheartedly agree with your marketing approach. As a woman who is 42 years old, I am aware of the pressure in today's society to look younger than your age. (...) I refuse to be pulled into the sad idea that women are uninteresting unless they look young, smooth and firm. The adverts do affect me though and do sometimes contribute to a lack of self esteem if i'm feeling a bit low. So it's great to have an alternative approach. May you lead the way to great things!"

“Congratulations on your excellent statement. Have you noticed some of these so called celebrities as they try to hold back their age by false means? yuck! Anyone would think that being 58 is the end of the world!!!"

“Just read your statement and I feel it’s like a breath of fresh air. Being beautiful is as much about a person’s state of mind as it is what they look like. Look at actress Helen Mirren – 62 years old and in my opinion still wonderful looking, and it’s mostly because she exudes such confidence and is happy in her own skin. Good for you speaking out!"

| Mickey Insley, The Green Apple |

“It is also easy to talk about wrinkles not being a problem when you are young and don't have any!! Ha ha!"

“Thank you very much for your warm statements. I totally agree with them.
In this months health and beauty magazine there was a statement in an advert which said:
'People judge us by our appearance . Luckily, there is XYZ, the number one .......', etc.
I thought this was disgusting!!!! These sort of statements contribute to the false idea that you are only loved and respected when you look beautiful. This creates unhappiness and maybe even depression, because we will of course never meet the standards we think we need to!!! I love and judge people by their warmth, personality, kindness and not by their wrinkles. Beauty is for me, energy from the inside out!!!"

“For far too long we have allowed cosmetic companies to seduce us into believing only youth is beautiful. We have chased the dream with expensive creams, needles and surgery. Raw Gaia lifts the veil of illusion and reconnects us to the truth. Raw Gaia reminds us that beauty is and always has been in the eye of the beholder. Thank you for making the stand."

“I think the Raw Gaia approach is very refreshing. Personally, I dismiss any product that claims to rejuvenate, reduce wrinkles etc., not just because it’s absurd but also because it’s almost certain that animals have been put through cruel tests to create the miraculous new formula. Hope this honest approach gets the publicity it deserves."

“What is beautiful about Raw Gaia is that it focuses on the real beauty. Their wonderful products really help women to enjoy their skin and relish in the most amazing beauty products to enhance not, a superficial beauty but the beauty found in themselves. Raw Gaia's approach leads women in a new concept that ageing does not mean decaying and wasting away, but it means becoming wise, knowledgeable and even more beautiful. The ingredients used give that feel good factor every time you apply them, because they are not false promises always leading to a disappointment by promising to ‘reduce’. From a personal point, I have a fantastic time using them."

“Both your products and marketing stance are the makings of the long awaited ‘pot of beauty’ all women have been waiting for and dreaming about in my opinion.
Let me explain: since I myself have sensitive skin, most, if not all, products (even the very expensive and specifically for sensitive skin) I have tried left my skin feeling too dry or blotchy or too itchy, etc. I have had more ‘luck’ using my own concoctions of pure essential oils and tinctures than commercially available products of any sort.
However since winning a pot of Raw Gaia in a raffle, I tried it at home and I could feel the difference in my skin the very next day. Within two days people were starting to notice and asking me whether there is something different about me as I somehow looked more radiant. Just like it is important for me to put organic, vegan and un-heated plant-based products in my body for sustenance, health and vitality, I’ve come to realise the same applies when caring for my skin!
Thank you for providing products that women like myself can use with confidence knowing that not only are their skin’s natural beauty given the best care, but that using Raw Gaia products does not contribute in any way to this madness of fake promises of airbrushed ‘beauty’. I can accept compliments on the radiance of my complexion with a clear conscience knowing these products to be cruelty free regarding animals and cruelty free regarding the fake airbrushed ‘beauty’ promised women when using other products!
We applaud your long awaited products and marketing stance!"

“We all appreciate the fact that marketing is big business and a lot of the time companies go to extraordinary lengths to do this. This in itself I feel, would have a negative effect on the products being sold. What I mean by this statement is, because
of the 'spin' attached to the products being sold, the false statements in themselves, will potentially lower the effectiveness of the product. Our lives are constantly being bombarded by erroneous information, so well done Raw Gaia at helping to put the record straight."

“I love your honesty that cosmetic companies shouldn't push too far by focusing on their only so-called "anti" or "miracle" cream/serum/products and degrading women's feelings. Being truthful, appreciative and understanding about a human's body will not hurt the sale of a cosmetic line. Instead, it might lead both consumers and companies to a better and productive relationship inside out."
