Organic skin care is good, 100% is better!

Did you know that up to 60% of what you apply to your skin will be absorbed into your body? By their very nature, skin care products are designed to penetrate the skin, so it makes sense to choose only those products that are made only with the purest of ingredients.

When it comes to choosing skin care, it is best to use products that are made ONLY with ingredients that are 100% organic, vegan, raw/living and truly natural, that is, plant-derived and not chemically altered, such as the products offered by Raw Gaia. In this article, we will focus on the importance of pure, organic skin care.

If your skin care product is not made with organic ingredients, you could potentially be rubbing pesticide, fertiliser and GM food residues into your skin. Over time, as the skin tries to cope with chemical toxins, it becomes overburdened and weak, becoming more vulnerable to damage from free radicals, dryness and sensitivities. In addition, soils exposed to agrochemicals are also often depleted of an adequate level of minerals, which are essential to healthy skin.

In contrast, organic skin care ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, artificial fertilisers and genetically modified ingredients. Organic ingredients also tend to have stronger life energy in them, better flavour and smell, as well as a higher concentration of minerals and more potent natural actives than their non-organic counterparts. Therefore, organic ingredients are of much better quality and consequently they have better nourishing, moisturizing and healing qualities. Pure, organic formulas are especially advisable for people with sensitive skin conditions like acne or eczema, as they are less likely to cause irritation or rashes.

Organic farming methods are also kinder to the environment too. Through using natural fertilizers, they greatly reduce the amount of toxic agrochemicals released into the environment and groundwater water supplies. The less aggressive and less intensive farming practices of organic agriculture also help safeguard the quality of natural resources.

Surprisingly, shopping for truly organic skin care products is quite challenging. In the UK, a skin care product can be labeled organic as long as 1% of the ingredients are organic, so the product could still contain inferior and even harmful ingredients. So as consumers we need to very careful and check that all the ingredients are organic.

Buying certified organic products is advisable but also bear in mind that there are many really good skin care products available which are made with wildcrafted ingredients (ie, harvested from the wild and free from chemicals). Also, many rural communities in developing countries sell raw, plant-based ingredients grown under ecological principles and fair-trade practices but are not yet certified because certification is expensive.
