This fairtrade bracelet is made with four red glass beads with lovely "eye" designs. It was carefully hand-crafted by Tibetan refugees in India, using Murano glass from Italy.
The bracelet is strung on black thread (so it's all vegan). The thread is knotted in a very skilled fashion. The bracelet can be adjusted by pulling two sets of strings at the back, which have small black beads on each end.
The reason for selling these products on our website is the following. During a three-week stay in Dharamsala, India in August 2007, we had the oportunity to get to know several Tibetans . Tibetans are the friendliest and nicest people we've ever met and we became good friends with many of them.
Thousands of Tibetans escape from China every year, fleeing from political oppression and lack of religious freedom. Unemployment among Tibetan refugees in India is particularly pressing and therefore a glass bead making project was set up in 2004 to help create jobs.
Through this project, workers get paid a fair salary for their work, allowing them to cover all their food, shelter and basic expenses.
We want to support Tibetan refugees by selling their jewellery on our website. All profits from the sales of these items will go to develop a new income generation project, jointly with the Tibetan Unemployment Co-operative Society in Dharamsala, India.
